John’s passion for rock waterfalls began at an early age as he grew up playing and swimming in the remote creeks on Lookout Mountain, Georgia.
During the dry season he and his friends would dam a creek with rocks to increase the depth of their swimming holes.
John left Lookout Mountain, Georgia, at the age of sixteen, not to return until 1974 to farm his parent’s property with his father. In 1977, he built a restaurant with some friends in Naples, Florida, called “Outside In”. John was able to use rocks that he had collected from his farming years to make a waterfeature consisting of numerous waterfalls, a sixty foot stream, and two ponds. He also designed the restaurant’s hardscsape, garden landscape and lighting.
1978 marked the John’s first official year as a professional naturalist sculptor. He went into business building waterfeatures and landscaping and has been doing so ever since.
John continued working in the Naples area until 1995, then in the lower Florida Keys (Little Torch Key) until 2000. After leaving the Keys, he moved to Warne, North Carolina, and is still building waterfeatures in the area.
