Carolina Crafting Visits Alaska

July 28th, 2008

We’re a long way from home for this show. We head far north to Alaska visiting the Saturday Anchorage Market and Festival. There we explore various crafters, artists, musicians and more. Even though it was cloudy most of the time, we enjoyed the cool weather. The mountains were still snowcapped in June. It was always 40ยบ F every morning. This is our last show of season one. But wait, we have one more, a bonus episode on a huge kiln being built back home by Rob Withrow at Smoke In The Mountains Pottery in North Carolina.

This last weekend I attended the 10th Annual Butternut Creek Festival in Blairsville GA. What a wonderful site for a festival. It was shady, had paved paths and good parking. (Always a plus) I enjoyed shopping and met a few old friends, like Carole and Jerry Chaplo. of Mountain Crafty Bears 2. I love this couple’s love of life. It was nice to see so many people supporting local artists. For more information about this show, you can check out their web site at: www.butternutcreekfestival.com

Sorry there have been so few posts. We had two groups of visitors. Both groups were from Denmark. All of them loved the mountains that we call home.

I went to the Murphy 4th July Celebration. There was a small sprinkling of crafters. All of them enthusiastic. I found a chain saw artist that I really hope we can feature in the near future. I love small town celebrations. Always a good chance to visit with neighbors.

This weekend is the Butternut Creek Festival in Blairsville, GA. I will visit and give you’all highlights.

The following weekend (July 25-July 26) in Asheville NC is the largest, free outdoor craft show in the South, the Bele Chere Festival.

Check your local paper for art shows and visit one. Always fun, lots of great shopping and good food.

We will be taping again in mid August. I can’t wait.

Thanks for watching the show.

In this week’s show we visit with Bill Groce of Morganton, Georgia as he demonstrates how he carves beautiful folk style and realistic birds out of wood. To see Bill’s work visit www.billgbirdart.com. Our next show will be a special one as we visit with some of the crafters and artists of Anchorage, Alaska. Back in June we had a chance to go to our 49th state just as they are celebrating 50 years of statehood. So make plans to catch Carolina Crafting in Alaska!
